Dogs are believed to be descendants of wild wolves. They were the very first wild animal to be tamed. Ancient guy most likely brought house cub wolves to raise as pets. The pet wolves were also useful in driving away bears and other wild animals. Among the earliest recognized breed of dogs is the Salukis, which were reproduced by Egyptians countless years earlier as searching canines. Greyhounds and Dalmatians are also among the earliest types documented.

Pets helped to pull loads, herd cattle and sheep, and secure their master and the master's residential or commercial property. The Ancient Greeks developed tiny lap canines, which were indicated to be held in a woman's lap to help keep her stomach warm. In more recent years, pets have been trained as seeing eye pets for the blind.

Today many pets, such as the Poodle or Chihuahua, no longer look like the wolf. Other canines, such as the Siberian Husky and the German Shepherd still show a strong similarity to the wolf. There are many various types in existence today, from the short haired Beagle and Boston Terrier to the long haired Cockers and Scotties. The Beagle may be better fit to live in the city, while Collies or setters might be more comfy in the nation. The highest pet dogs are Great Danes and the Irish Wolfhound. They would probably be more comfortable in a location where they had a great deal of room to run and play.

In the United States, one out of three families owns one or more dogs. The majority of pets live anywhere from eight to fifteen years. When dogs are one years of age, they are as physically fully grown as a 15 years of age human. Pet dogs can see some color however not as strongly as human beings, hence they are considered color blind. Yet, pet dogs can see better in dim light than us. Dogs have us beat in the classification of smell. Their sense of smell is up to one million times higher than human beings!

No matter which kind of dog you choose- huge, little, smooth haired, shaggy, quick, sluggish, playful or dignified, pet dogs make terrific companions. Enjoy their friendship and remember they require a lot of petting, attention, and love to be delighted!
